Christie was doing a phone call on a patient scheduled for surgery as part of the pre-admission process. Over the course of the twenty-minute call, Christie noticed something was not right. She was unsure if it was pain medications or something else. She kept asking questions and determined that it was probably hypoglycemia. She brought her concerns to me. We had someone call to get emergency contact information from the surgeon's office. Christie called the patient back to try to continue to monitor her while the local EMS was contacted to get her help. Christie kept the patient talking until the EMS arrived and determined the patient's blood sugar was 18. I truly believe Christie saved that patient's life with just a phone call. Face to face assessments are so vital in determining when something is off with a patient. Christie was able to do it through a phone call. Her quick thinking and assessment skills were essential in getting the patient the help she needed.
