Christina was able to help the patient and family transition with dignity and support not only for the patient, but also the family.
Being a nurse isn’t easy. In fact, it is a field that can be extremely demanding, and even unforgiving, to those who pursue it. Nurses are required to be not only compassionate and helpful but also competent and responsible. I believe there are innate qualities that can make one nurse better than others and this is why I would like to nominate Christina for a DAISY Award. I have watched Christina as a nurse on Telemetry for several years now. She is sometimes a staff nurse and sometimes the charge nurse. She displays the following qualities High Standards of Professionalism, Diligence, Exceptional Communication Skills, Quick Problem-Solving Abilities, Empathetic, and a good Sense of Humor. Diligence- Christina is always hardworking. She works long hours and is always up and running to do it again the next day. Exceptional Communication Skills-A great nurse has exceptional listening and speaking skills. Christina can solve problems because she can communicate well with patients, families, and staff members. Quick Problem-Solving Abilities- I have seen Christina in emergencies. She is always prepared with solutions, whether it's hands-on or speaking to patients’ families, comforting patients, or communicating with doctors or other staff. Empathetic- Christina adds humane touch with her kindhearted attitude. Good Sense of Humor- Finding humor in difficult situations isn’t easy but the nurses who can do it can mitigate a stressful situation better. Christina can mix elements of fun and humor into her work and her smile is infectious. While on the Telemetry floor one day I recently saw Christina in a difficult situation. She was the charge nurse, and it was a busy day. She had a nurse on the floor that was struggling. She was able to recognize that this nurse had a super heavy patient load and had multiple patients that were requiring total care. One patient was a comfort measures patient. Christina was able to help that nurse by calling the family, staying with the patient to get the patient comfortable and to speak with pastoral care that had arrived at the right time. Christina was able to help the patient and family transition with dignity and support not only for the patient, but also the family. I know that she probably didn’t think it was a big deal at the time, but I sure did. I realized how lucky we are to have a nurse like her in our hospital taking care of our patients. I am thankful that I get to call her a co-worker. It's nurses like Christina that make a difference not only to patients and families but to all of us working alongside her. Thank you, Christina, for going above and beyond each and every day!
