Christy received initial hesitation from the MD but continued to advocate for the patient as she knew it was not in the patient’s best interest to be discharged.
Christina, or Christy, was an outstanding advocate for her patient, an 18-year-old primigravida who was 24 hours postpartum. A new intern gave the patient the option to leave at 24 hours, however, Christy advocated that the standard of care for a primigravida was 48 hours and due to many factors including, the patient’s age, being a first-time mom, non-English speaking, limited prenatal care, and needing assistance with breastfeeding, that the patient should not be discharged. Additionally, the pediatrics unit was not going to discharge the baby. Christy received initial hesitation from the MD but continued to advocate for the patient as she knew it was not in the patient’s best interest to be discharged. The intern came for a face-to-face conversation with Christy, and through her calm disposition and explanation, the intern eventually understood and agreed. Thank you, Christy, for advocating for this patient and their needs!
