Christine decided to purchase a new birdfeeder and placed it in front of the window of this 94-year-old resident.
Ms. Kelsch assisted during the Covid-19 Pandemic by volunteering for the VA's 4th mission by supporting and providing education to the community during a public health emergency. Christine was a member of Team Bravo, the task force that assisted long-term care facilities affected by COVID-19. She volunteered and supported several nursing homes by providing direct patient care and educating staff. All Nurses provide care; it is how Christine delivers her care that makes her an extraordinary DAISY Nurse.

While working at a Nursing Home during the VA's 4th mission, Christine assisted a resident’s move into a new room. Outside the window of this room was a bird feeder with multiple birds very close and visible from the window, chirping and enjoying their bird feed. The resident, who was 94 years old and spoke no words, was mesmerized by the birds right outside her window. The following day, the birdfeeder was removed and placed in front of the original resident's room by the family. The 94-year-old resident continued to look out the window, but no birds were present with no birdfeeder.

Christine decided to purchase a new birdfeeder and placed it in front of the window of this 94-year-old resident. As she could not speak, the resident visibly displayed a gleam of joy in her eyes as she was captivated by the birdfeeder and its many birds. Christine's kindness and compassion for this resident became evident as she began eating again as she watched the birds. Birds symbolize hope, relationships, loyalty, and passion, including strength, courage, and a symbol of peace, humanity, and love. For some, birds represent beauty, expression, happiness, endurance, and courage. Many people believe that birds symbolize freedom because they walk on earth, swim in the sea, and fly. Many cultures believe they represent eternal life, and some would say they serve as the connection between heaven and earth.

We will never know what these birds symbolized for this 94-year-old resident who was bedbound and spoke no words. What was evident was an expression seen in her eyes that displayed emotions of content and happiness. This resident passed away six months later from natural causes. Due to Christine's selfless and caring act, this resident could enjoy viewing the birds' activities within these last few months. "The Healer's Touch" is a Symbol of excellence and love in Nursing. It is a beautiful reminder of our nurses' commitment to serving. Christine's caring, compassion, and attentiveness is an excellent example. Christine, always remember the remarkable impact your kindness and compassion have provided to this resident.
