I am a nurse myself, so I know firsthand what it is like to manage multiple patients, but the care Christy provided went entirely above and beyond. She brought me peace, comfort, and clinical safety during what became both the best and most difficult day of my life.
My labor was long and exhausting. While my family was sleeping, my baby’s heart rate kept dropping. Every 30 minutes, Christy had to come into the room, wake me up, and try a different position to bring the heart rate back up. I was physically and mentally depleted, but Christy met me every single time with a calm, loving demeanor that brought me immediate peace and strength.
By hour 36 of labor, my baby was face-up, causing extreme pain, and I was not progressing. Christy came on shift, looked at me, and confidently said, "We will make this happen." She rarely left my bedside. She tried countless positions to help the baby drop, and when the pain became unbearable, she manually rocked my hips for 45 minutes straight, distracting me and talking me through the worst of it until it eased. When the pain reached a breaking point, she immediately called the doctor back into the room—even though the doctor had just left. Because of Christy’s fierce advocacy, the doctor returned and performed a maneuver that finally granted me a few hours of relief.
At hour 40, Christy checked me and delivered the news that I was finally 7 cm dilated! She celebrated right along with my family, and her genuine joy made it clear how much she truly cared. Unfortunately, upon a recheck, I had regressed to 6 cm. When the team determined that I needed an emergency C-section due to failure to progress, Christy was right there holding me up.
The challenges didn't end in the OR. During the surgery, I hemorrhaged, but Christy stayed right by my side to calm me. Because of her presence, I never felt unsafe or scared. After surgery, I continued to bleed in the recovery room and could not be transferred to the postpartum unit. My husband and I had not slept in over 24 hours, and I was entirely wiped out. Recognizing our exhaustion, Christy sat right outside the L&D PACU doors, literally guarding the room to ensure no one interrupted us so we could finally sleep.
It is hard to fully put into words the impact Christy had on my family. She checked on me every single day during our maternity stay. Because of her clinical excellence, unyielding advocacy, and deep empathy, I felt truly cared for as a human being, and never just like another patient in a bed. She is the absolute definition of a DAISY nurse
