Christine still stayed by my husband's side with an incredible amount of compassion and skilled care.
Christine was my husband's nurse after his surgery to treat colorectal cancer. He had open surgery and an ileostomy. It was a lot for him to deal with. Christine was in the room checking on him regularly. She was a very skilled nurse and had every detail of his condition, medications, and recovery plan clear and precise in her head.

He went into AFIB and had blood pressure issues. He didn't tolerate the AFIB med ordered by the Physician. Christine didn't leave the room. Cardiology came as well as the Physician. Christine still stayed by my husband's side with an incredible amount of compassion and skilled care. She was so loving and kind to him and me as the family member. It was a very intense and stressful situation. She gave us great peace that they were on top of the medical crisis and prepared for every possibility.

The room was very crowded with the cardiology team present but Christine stayed calm and focused. This lasted for a long time and the entire time she keep eye contact and was in tune with the patient's well-being physically and emotionally. She looked him in the eyes with the most compassionate face and tone to reassure him. We knew he was in the best hands. Even the next day when she was off shift she called to check on him.

When we returned four months later she remembered us and shared great joy with us as he was doing so well. Over the past 14 months, we have had several dozen nurses at Duke and the cancer center. We can say without a shadow of a doubt that Christine Kardel is a true DAISY Nurse.
