I am truly amazed at Christine's dedication to our patients.
Christine recently cared for a 16-year-old boy whose discharge plan included inpatient behavioral health. He was due to turn 17 in the next day or 2. Personally, witnessing the care Christine delivered to this patient really proved how compassionate and empathetic she is, and how much she truly advocates for her patients. She spent time sitting and listening and really seeing this teen as a person.
Within the first few hours of her first day with him, he felt very comfortable disclosing personal aspects of his life. Because Christine paused amongst the chaos of 73 patients in the department and heard this young man, she was able to advocate for the best discharge plan. She spoke multiple times with the patient's mother as well as the behavioral health team. She knew his safety wasn't at risk, but he was in a difficult situation and having trouble navigating through that. She knew that he was stressed about missing tests and sports at school. She knew that ultimately, he would do better getting back to normal with someone to talk to on an outpatient basis. She conveyed this to the patient's mother, and the mother finally agreed.
Additionally, Christine was able to let the patient shower and spoil him with some birthday goodies. But most of all, Christine listened, and that allowed this young man to turn 17 in his own home. She gave him a little freedom, but also a free space to open up. I am truly amazed at Christine's dedication to our patients.
