By simply being present with the patient and spending time with them, she builds trust, understands their needs and preferences, and provides the most effective patient-centered care.
Christine is an outstanding nurse, and as her orientee, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand her exceptional care for patients. She truly embodies what it means to go above and beyond, providing exceptional care to every patient. Every time she steps out of the room, her patients praise her exceptional care. One notable example of Christine's dedication involved a patient who was deaf and partially blind in one eye. This patient did not speak English, did not have an understanding of American Sign Language, and had difficulty visualizing the interpreter's iPad due to their poor vision, yet despite the challenges in communication, Christine was adamant to find a way to effectively communicate with this patient. We started by using gestures and involving other employees on the unit who spoke the patient’s language. However, Christine went a step further, determined to gain a clearer understanding of the patient’s needs. She located picture charts to help the patient point out and communicate his specific needs and requests. She generously took her time by going through each thing in the menu, pulling up photos of the various foods so she would be able to decide with all options present. This is just one of the many examples of how Christine cares so deeply for her patients. She often reminds me not to view nursing as a task-oriented job, emphasizing that it's easy to get caught up in completing and documenting tasks. By simply being present with the patient and spending time with them, she builds trust, understands their needs and preferences, and provides the most effective patient-centered care. As a fellow nurse, she is approachable, helpful, knowledgeable, and understanding. She is passionate about mentoring new nurses, promoting best practices, and fostering a more compassionate and effective hospital environment. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award.
