ENS Fisk's level of professionalism was tempered with genuine concern for my husband’s well-being.
ENS Christopher Fisk was our assigned nurse during the 24 hour stay on 5 North. This young man is truly one of the Navy’s finest caregivers. His level of professionalism was tempered with genuine concern for my husband’s well-being. We also saw him working and teaching inexperienced corpsmen, helping them to grow skills in assessment and lab draws. His manner put the young man at ease, giving him the confidence he needed to try, and the discernment to know when to stop.
The most impressive thing ENS Fisk did, was something only another nurse would recognize, and it’s a skill only the best use. ENS Fisk saw how nervous, and worried my husband was, and how intently focused he was becoming on the possible poor outcomes. Instead of saying trite things like it will be okay etc- he honed in on areas of his life that he was proud of, and used simple conversation to distract him. In no time at all, I saw my husband relax as they swapped corpsman stories and shared duty station tales. My husband had no idea this was actually an assessment tool because ENS Fisk was so naturally good at it.
Later, when we needed answers, he helped grease the mighty wheels that control discharge, ENS Fisk became a fierce advocate. He found and brought medical staff to us, knowing how important it was to be able to leave due to our 5 hour drive that could turn into 6 or 7 with traffic. He helped us to get on the road a full two hours earlier than we expected.
We wanted to make sure ENS Fisk was recognized as one of your best up-and-coming new nurses. We feel we were very fortunate to have met him, even in these circumstances. Our time with NMCSD is not yet over, and we will be back for follow-ups, but we are confident that the treatment received there as well as the staff are some of the best in the world.
