I have a patient who has been in antepartum for 46 days. She mentioned something to me tonight which really touched me. She told me how it has been sometimes quite tough being here for such a long time and how certain nurses have made the journey a little easier. Christy Koperek's name came up and this patient told me how happy she is when she has Christy as her nurse.
The thing that really touched me was how on one day she was feeling a little down and Christy sat in her room for 45 minutes talking to her. At that time the patient complained how she really needed a pedicure. Christy ensured that her other patients were covered, and sat down and painted this patient's toes. I know it is not a "nursing duty" but my patient told me how that act of kindness went "so, so far" and that she will "never forget a nurse doing that" on a day when she really needed the company and compassion. Christy was orienting a nurse that day and it really struck me what a lesson it was to her also.
Every time I see Christy she is upbeat and her patients always miss her when she leaves.
