Her compassion and professionalism were obvious, but it was her way of engaging with me each time that brought a smile or a laugh.
A few weeks ago, I found myself at Sanford in the middle of the night. All the nurses I encountered were pretty wonderful, but one stood out as exceptional. As the shift changed on Friday morning, Christy was introduced to me as someone who will “keep me smiling or laughing all day.” This was not an exaggeration. Although the window blinds were closed, Christy brought sunshine into the room with each visit. Her mask obscured her smile, but it came through in her eyes and voice. Her compassion and professionalism were obvious, but it was her way of engaging with me each time that brought a smile or a laugh. She was interested in who I am (not just the cancer) and shared with me bits of who she is. We shared observations of life – its joys and challenges. I know Friday was a very busy day for her as I saw her moving up and down the hall many, many times, but when she was with me, she made me feel like I was important, her only patient. She looked tired at the end of the day but took time to stop and chat and say goodbye. I am forever grateful for her care and professionalism, but especially for making my hospital stay as short and as pleasant as possible. Her hug as I was discharged has stayed with me for weeks. Thank you, Christy!
