Our unit recently had a Palliative patient who had been on our floor multiple times over the last few months. The patient was a very young lady, struggling with a terminal cancer diagnosis. Chryssie was caring for the patient one night and it was becoming very evident that the patient was declining. She was incontinent and was unable to get up to go to the restroom. Chryssie talked the patient into getting a foley, to help make her more comfortable. The patient was very embarrassed and felt out of control of the whole situation. Chryssie went out of her way to get permission from our clinical manager, as well as the procedure team, to place the foley herself, so that the patient would be more comfortable and have more privacy. Chryssie placed the foley by herself, with just her and the patient in the room.
At a time when a patient was very vulnerable, Chryssie went out of her way to make the patient more comfortable and more at peace with all the changes that were occurring. She looked at the patient's need at the time, and was able to perform a nursing task, while being the patient's advocate.
