When I think of who the ideal candidate for this recognition should be, there are few more deserving than my nurse colleague in the ER, Cieara Reed. Her compassion combined with excellent nursing care is on display every shift she works. I look forward to every shift I can work alongside her because I know every patient will receive excellent care and truly be cared for.
We had a patient together who had come by ambulance for a very minor complaint. He was in a wheelchair and had some healed stage 1 decubitus ulcers, but complained of pain when sitting in his wheelchair all day. While many may have groaned due to managing such a minor complaint, Cieara spent quite a bit of time sitting with him, discussing how to minimize pain while sitting in a wheelchair, and arranging follow-up. This was while she was simultaneously managing 4 other critical patients.
I think Cierara was born to be a nurse. She is so amazing at managing the care of the person and care of the medical emergency. We are very blessed to have her as a member of our ED team. I am also grateful that she will be helping us train our next generation of nurses in the ED to embody some of the same characteristics that she possesses.
