Cierra has demonstrated the qualities of a nurse that will make a difference in all the patients she cares for. The compassion, respect, and care she provides to her patients are to be commended. She took care of a patient that was on contact precautions, depressed, multiple chronic health problems, and would have an extended hospital stay. This patient had experienced a disconnect with family due to the contagiousness of his infections.
Cierra provided patient-centered care that ensured awareness of and sympathy for the patient's suffering without judgment. She spent time with the patient just listening and responding back in honest and straightforward communication. While most staff would rush through this patient's care and get out of the room as fast as they could, Cierra embraced the opportunity to spend time getting to know this patient, provide care, and support.
The patient called me to the room and wanted to express a heartfelt thanks to Cierra for making his day brighter. The patient stated, "Not only do I feel better, but I feel ministered to, and it is all because of Cierra." She is a wonderful nurse and will have a great future.
The patient also complimented Cierra because she made him feel like he wasn't contagious at all and that she encouraged him to work on getting better. This patient had tears of joy as he spoke to me about the care he received from Cierra. It was an experience that needs to be shared and continued throughout all our nursing careers. It is a reminder that compassion, respect, and patient-centered care are essential in being a nurse.
