Integrity (Honesty and Ethical)
Cindy is open and honest to her patients, her colleagues, and co-workers. She is one of the few staff members I have seen that will openly admit she made a mistake or should have done something better after- the-fact. Her moral turpitude as both a nurse and person is exemplary.

Compassion (Embraces the total person)
When I watch Cindy with her patients, (as often it is usually just the RN and the NP who is in the room at the same time with our clients), I can indisputably account for her daily interactions with the patients and family. The care, concern, and compassion that she provides for each one of the children who are getting surgery at Legacy, is paramount in this department. Furthermore, she often does so without expectation and without recognition. Her actions reflect the compassion for her patients and the pride in her profession.

Accountability (Does what she says)
I have seen Cindy help other nurses or staff members, without fail or request, when they need help: even if this is unreciprocated. I know that if I need help or request for Cindy to get something for one of the families, I am guaranteed that Cindy will follow through, if simply just from the past precedent.

Respect (Treats others with worth, dignity and value)
Cindy is always trying to help out anywhere she can. She will sometimes bring in treats or gifts for the staff, always recognizes and thanks our floor HUC, and treats the CMC interpreters with respect when they come to our aide.

Excellence (strives to be the best)
Of note, Cindy does not “slack off” when no one is watching. She performs, what CMC labels “AIDET,” to her families regardless of whether or not a physician is present, a student is with her, or we are expecting a “surprise” visit from accreditation. She continues to try to improve herself as a nurse, attends CEU events on the floor and in her own time, and demonstrates the core assets needed in the promotion of the nursing profession.

Tell a specific story that describes how this Nurse meets the criteria for DAISY Award
I recently observed Cindy train a new hire nurse to the unit. Cindy, possibly without realizing, used multiple recommended effective teaching strategies in order to facilitate success with her mentee. She set example of AIDET, Children’s philosophy rhetoric, and pediatric child-specific communication with the patients in front of her mentee. She followed and observed her mentee as she learned the unit’s process for caring for the patients. She was also eloquent with feedback and offered ways to improve care to her mentee in a constructive and positive style forum. I watched as she formed a bond with her mentee. Now, this new mentee is an integral member of the pre-op team. Her mentee nurse is now a strong, positive asset to the unit, also reflecting the above mentioned qualities that were modeled and taught to her, as she has patterned her pre-op care from the integrity, compassion, respect, and excellence that Cindy provided as mentor.
