Claire Burke, RN
Two years ago, Claire Burke joined our Neuromuscular team in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery after years in the inpatient cardiac OR. Moving from that high-acuity surgical world into an outpatient clinic is no small shift, and Claire brought the best of both with her: the precision and discipline of the operating room, paired with a warmth that has made her the person our families trust most.
What sets Claire apart is not any single moment but a steady, daily pattern of choosing our patients. The children we care for live with cerebral palsy, neuromuscular conditions, and complex orthopaedic needs. For their families, the medical journey is often frightening and bewildering. Claire is the accessible bridge to our institution during exactly those moments. She is responsive, she is kind, and she meets parents where they are. Families do not just appreciate her. They universally rave about her, because she makes them feel seen and safe when everything else feels uncertain.
One example captures who Claire is. She noticed something the rest of us had not fully reckoned with: many of our children struggle with wound healing and pressure wounds, and our entire hospital has only one outpatient wound care specialist, recently hired. Rather than accept that gap, Claire enrolled in a wound care course on her own time and at her own expense, simply so she could understand the problem better and care for our patients better. That training has been invaluable to our team and, more importantly, to the children who now receive better wound care because Claire decided it mattered.
That is the through line in everything she does. Keen attention to detail. A relentless work ethic. High ethical standards. And an insatiable drive to improve the care of our kids. She does not wait to be asked. She sees a need, and she closes it.
I am genuinely a better physician because I work alongside Claire. She pushes our whole team to be better clinicians and more compassionate caregivers, and she does it by example rather than by saying a word about it. Our families are fortunate to have her in their corner, and so am I.
