What stands out the most to everyone who meets her is the patience and compassion she exhibits. She is truly one of the most sympathetic and thoughtful nurses I know.
Role Model Compassionate Care:
I would like to take this opportunity to recognize an outstanding role model for her exceptional and compassionate care within our Diabetes Center. Claire Reilly, RN is the epitome of what the DAISY Award represents.

I first met Claire 5 years ago when I began working at the Diabetes Center and she was my preceptor. I was so impressed with her diabetes knowledge that I was not surprised to learn she was a Certified Diabetes Educator. I knew instantly that she would be my “go-to person” with any questions I had about anything diabetes related. Her wealth of knowledge and willingness to share it have always been such an asset to our clinic. However, what stands out the most to everyone who meets her is the patience and compassion she exhibits. She is truly one of the most sympathetic and thoughtful nurses I know. She always takes the time to listen to each patient without judgment and goes above and beyond to advocate for their needs. Her calm demeanor and professionalism with each patient are appreciated, and her empathy and kindness are contagious, a role model to us all.

Special Connection:
Claire makes it a point to connect with every one of our patients every single day. One special connection that comes to mind is with our patient V. V is a 48-year-old woman with metastatic brain cancer who, after aggressive treatment, developed insulin-dependent diabetes. Her blood sugar was getting very hard to control, and she was started on an insulin pump. Diabetes management is a full-time, never-ending job. Furthermore, dealing with debilitating brain cancer, one can only imagine the angst V was having. Claire has worked closely with V over the last few months to help regulate her blood sugar and ease her worry. She has met with her for one-on-one pump training. She has communicated over the phone and through My Chart messaging multiple times a day. She has helped educate, troubleshoot, and guide her through numerous setbacks and cheered her on with each small victory. Claire has even visited V while she was hospitalized to check in on her and bring her extra pump supplies.

Significant Difference:
Recently, during a phone call, V expressed her utmost gratitude to Claire. Through tears, she confided in me how frustrating and exhausting all of this has been for her, but she has found trust and reassurance in Claire’s ongoing support. Claire has helped her become confident using her insulin pump. She is less anxious and more comfortable with her diabetes management. Most importantly, Claire has helped her regain her independence. In fact, she informed me she was heading to Vermont to ski with her friends for the weekend. Looking back, I can see how the bond that they formed has helped V feel validated and empowered to continue to live her life to the fullest. And that’s really what it’s all about.
