It truly takes grace, compassion, and courage to give someone kindness when they themselves are not being kind to us.
Claire constantly goes above and beyond for all of her patients and their family members. There are simply too many times to count. I always hear her name mentioned in rounding by patients who always remember her positivity and kindness. I have worked beside her for several years now and have never known her to have a bad day. Her positive attitude always shines through the difficulties we all face as nurses.
Claire has shown tremendous resilience and grace today. She had an extremely challenging day because she simply advocated for our unit's safety. She kindly notified a patient and their family members regarding our isolation and visitation policy to maintain proper infection control. Unfortunately, this caused the family members to attempt to single out Claire and say very unkind things to her. Nevertheless, Claire remained extremely professional and kindly continued to give the patient their medications while answering questions from the patient and their family. She showed so much patience and kindness to everyone with the support of our kind OA as well.
Afterward, I noticed her in the hallway once again cheerfully smiling and interacting with her other patients. I know receiving comments like the ones she received can hurt and have you question so many different things. The truth is, Claire truly embodies the type of nurse the DAISY Award represents. It is easy to show kindness to those family members and patients that show us the same kindness. It truly takes grace, compassion, and courage to give someone kindness when they themselves are not being kind to us. Claire has achieved just that and then some by finding ways to continue to spread her positivity after her encounter. With that said, I kindly ask the DAISY Award be given to Claire. I could not think of a better way to remind her that she is truly a great nurse deserving of recognition.
