She conveyed to him: You are seen, you can have a say, you are important. Especially during cancer treatment, when a child loses so much control, that is priceless.
I would like to nominate Nurse Clara for the DAISY Award because, for my son L - and for me as a mother - she was much more than “just” a nurse.

L was treated on the children's cancer ward for almost three years. From the very beginning, when Clara was still a student nurse herself, she built up a very special relationship with him with her loving, approachable manner. She met him at eye level, with genuine interest, with warmth, and above all with a real heart for children.

Even when unpleasant or painful care measures were required, she never simply “went through with it” but always tried to find a way to involve L. She conveyed to him: You are seen, you can have a say, you are important. Especially during cancer treatment, when a child loses so much control, that is priceless.

Clara took her time. She took an interest in L's world - his enthusiasm for video games, his passion for building Lego - and always managed to make him laugh.

But her care went far beyond everyday life on the ward: Clara never saw L as just a “patient” but as a child, as a person. She not only saw him, but also me as a mother with my worries and fears.

Even when L was only receiving palliative treatment, Clara was there. She showed us that she had not forgotten him, neither as a child nor as a person. And even after his death, she took an interest. I was deeply touched by the fact that she said goodbye to L in person and accompanied our family to the funeral. She still remembers the wonderful - and above all funny - moments we shared with him.

All of this demonstrates what true care is all about: professional competence, yes, but above all, compassion, humanity, time, and genuine interest.

She was a ray of hope for L. For me, she was a pillar of support. She will be for many other families, too.

Nurse Clara is an exceptional nurse - and more than worthy of receiving the DAISY Award.
