I knew Clare deserved to be recognized for her care and compassion when I was working with a patient who suffers from alcoholism and comes to the hospital frequently. This patient was soiled in many bodily fluids; Clare ran to her locker and returned with a brand new sweatsuit for the patient. I asked where she went, and she told me that for Christmas last year she asked for different sizes of sweatsuits from her family. She said that way when homeless patients come in, or those who are soiled, they have new clothes to take with them. I was in awe of her thoughtfulness. She continued to care for this difficult patient with such professionalism and care.
This patient repeatedly kept saying, "I love you" and she would respond, "I care for you, too." He would cry in embarrassment and Clare would hold his hand and assure him that "everyone needs help sometimes." It was a moment of such sincerity that it really resonated with me. Clare is a true role model for other nurses, and I hope she knows the true impact she has on so many people. She is a true DAISY Nurse for the care she gives every day, but especially when caring for those patients who don't care for themselves.
