I was directed to the AMC ED by my primary care physician for some COVID and some not necessarily COVID symptoms. From the ED to the floor, my care was excellent. Claudia was my nurse for two of the days I was an in-patient. There were times I was irrational and unreasonable in my expectations and Claudia and her PCA were always calmly professional, patient, and compassionate. While frightened to death and alone, she was able to calm me and make me feel as if I had a family member there caring for me.
But more than her treatment of me was impressive. My roommate was very very ill and freely expressed her discomfort, sometimes in unreasonable demands. Every time she made every effort to meet her demands and unarticulated needs with love.
Finally, in the room one can hear the chatter of our nurses and others in the hall. Patients were always spoken of and acted upon with respect for personal dignity.
I would note that being at AMC during the pandemic was my least wished for place. But I am leaving feeling both personally restored and in faith and humanity.
