Clenie Mukacyaka, RN is deserving of DAISY recognition for saving our patient’s life by following the 'no pass’ rule. Clenie responded to a patient's call light (patient not assigned to her). While I am sure this is not unusual for good nurses, Clenie's swift response to the call light saved our patient during a choking episode.

The event unfolded as so: Clenie saw the light and proceeded to the room. Upon entering the room, the patient was slumped over in his chair unresponsive. Clenie was unable to reach the phone or code blue button so she yelled out for help from her teammates. While she was awaiting assistance, Clenie shook the patient, yelled his name, and performed a sternal rub with lots of pressure. The sternal rub was enough to dislodge the food from the patient's throat, he vomited and began breathing on his own. The patient reported to me that he "knew I was choking and was able to push the call bell before passing out". He further stated, "Thank God someone came quick and saved me".

I know nurses check on patients assigned to their peers but I am thankful that Clenie was a true team player on this day at this time. The outcome could have been very different!
