Cody was caring for a patient who has a complex medical history and multiple current medical problems as a result. This patient is in the custody of his grandmother who lacks time, energy, and finances to care for herself.
During this patient's lengthy stay, Cody continued to get to know the grandmother, who he has cared for multiple times during previous hospitalizations. He noticed that the grandmother seemed very tired and was putting ice on one of her shoulders. Home health and nursing care had been suggested during previous hospitalizations and the grandmother politely declined stating that she could care for her grandson. Cody felt as though the grandmother was neglecting her own health to care for her grandson. He spent a lot of time during the hospitalization not only taking excellent care of the patient but making sure his grandmother was cared for as well.
During the last few days of the stay, Cody had conversations with the grandmother about how much he felt that home nursing care would help her and her grandson. By the end of the stay, the grandmother agreed to home health care and nursing care was arranged for three days a week. Cody showed extraordinary compassion and a commitment to family-centered care. He went above and beyond to ensure that his patient and family were cared for while they were at ETCH as well as beyond our four walls.
