Providence Hospital's motto is: Serve, Care, Heal. Colby Hearndon fulfilled all three of Providence's criteria one night in December. My elderly aunt entered Providence with a diagnosis of pneumonia, but she also had a chronic cough that impeded rest and sleep. When Ms. Hearndon reported for her shift, she was very thorough in assessing my aunt's pulmonary condition and administering her prescriptions. During the evening, my aunt had alternating periods of coughing and sleeping but never soundly sleeping. I reported my observations to Ms. Hearndon, including descriptions of her breathing and coughing. We discussed her medications, and she described their purposes. Later she administered medications to my aunt and took advantage of the opportunity to ask her exactly where she thought the trigger to her cough was. My aunt stated the cough trigger seemed to be in her throat. Based on previous observations, Ms. Hearndon concluded that a throat spray might be beneficial in providing cough relief and enhancing needed rest. She ordered the throat spray sometime around 4 am and administered the first dose upon its arrival. Ms. Hearndon adjusted other medications to accommodate my aunt's restful sleep. Ms. Hearndon's personal standards of service and care provided my aunt much needed rest and relief from her coughing. Only our Lord Jesus heals, but Ms. Hearndon provided the essential link between her highly skilled doctors and the patient. For that, she has our everlasting thanks and gratitude.
