I'm glad I can take this opportunity to tell about this special nurse who I met in the ICU. My husband was a cancer patient who started chemo. He started having breathing troubles from the start. The next morning, I got the worst phone call of my life telling me that he was in the ICU and had a breathing tube put in. This is the day I met Colin Steenkamp.
Colin explained things to me and my sister-in-law in a compassionate way that was easy to understand. Every time Colin came into my husband's room, he was explaining what he was doing, or what he was giving him. It's the way Colin did things: showing concern for my husband. He showed so much passion for his needs as a person lying in the bed. Any questions we had, he took his time to answer them or got someone if he couldn't. He showed that he truly cared for my spouse.
I was so relieved to see the days Colin was his nurse. He had other great nurses, but Colin shined! He showed true standards for my husband's safety and health. When I had to make the decision to pull the tube, Colin explained what would happen. I never met such a great, compassionate, friendly, and caring nurse. He left a great impression on my life. I know there are beautiful nurses that give a lot to patients. Colin is one! He's an asset to Memorial Hospital.
