As a Director your heart races a bit when you hear someone called to talk to you about one of your staff. I returned my phone call and talked to a funeral director from an area Funeral Home. She wanted to share with me how impressed she was with Colin's communication with her regarding a recent death in our department.

She stated he was so aware of how devastated the family was. "He was able to give me a full and accurate description of how the family was dealing with their grief. He was aware that the family was not ready to talk with me at this time. He was able to do that for them." She went on to say "he was very knowledgeable and polite. He was very patient with me. I knew the department was busy, but Colin took his time with me and I knew that this family had 100% of his attention in this difficult time in their lives."

The director told me she "has never had a nurse show so much concern and compassion when contacting her after a death. While the death of a patient is never easy, I am so proud to know that Colin was able to make this experience easier for the family. I am thankful that a busy professional took the time to share this story of compassion with me. Colin certainly was following the Mayo Health System values of compassion and caring and our Primary Value of the needs of the patient and their family comes first"!
