Colleen is such a kind, caring, and empathic nurse.
Colleen is such a kind, caring, and empathic nurse. Although our unit consists of mostly outpatients coming into PCH for short procedures, with a large patient volume and quick patient turnover, she still finds ways to make her patients feel special, like they are her only patient and top priority. That was the case with M, who came in for a sedated MRI. M hadn’t been feeling well over the last couple weeks, so they were ruling things out with an MRI. Colleen was looking over the chart and noticed that M had labs that needed to be drawn as well. Originally, mom thought they could get the labs another time, but Colleen advocated for the patient and encouraged/empowered the mom that the labs could easily be drawn while she was sedated, stating it would save the family time and another hospital visit. Turns out that those labs showed a diagnosis of type one diabetes with a high A1C. Upon revisiting Primary Children’s for another procedure, M's mom was brought to tears when retelling the story to another nurse in our unit. Over and over, she expressed how grateful she was that Colleen pushed for her daughter to get the labs drawn during that visit. Mom stated that because her labs showed elevated glucose levels, they were able to quickly get into M's PCP, then into Primary Children’s inpatient for diabetes management before she became really sick, ended up in DKA, or needed a PICU stay. M's mom said that Colleen saved her daughter’s life because she took the time to assess M's individual needs and go above and beyond what they came to Primary Children’s for. Thank you, Colleen, M and her family are forever grateful to you!
