she was incredibly trauma-informed, asking permission each time with each exam and explained what she was doing for the patient.
I am a medical student who did her 2-week inpatient OB/GYN rotation at Fontana and Ontario. I was fortunate enough to work and observe nurse Connie Parsall at triage. We had a young patient come in for possible trauma to the abdomen at 30 something weeks into her pregnancy. She had been receiving prenatal care at RUHS and was scared for her new baby. She was uncomfortable in the new environment / hospital and feeling guilty about possibly exposing the staff with COVID. She was extremely apologetic throughout intake, but Connie just responded with pure warmth to the patient. Connie reassured the patient that she was right to come in and that the care team's goal was to make sure her and her baby were safe. Additionally, she was incredibly trauma-informed, asking permission each time with each exam and explained what she was doing for the patient. Before coming to med school, I had worked at a sexual assault resource center and had given workshops on what trauma- informed care looks and feels like. I can definitely endorse Connie as a champion of TIC and learned so much for her interaction with this patient. She also screened the patient for intimate partner violence, so she was also through as well. My mom is an L& D and postpartum nurse, and I admire her greatly. I’ve heard how crazy the floor can get with high patient volumes and acute concerns. If I learned my mom was as compassionate and warm like Connie was with this patient, I would just be so proud and would hope she is given recognition for her talent and effort. Thank you for consideration and thank you to Connie for setting a great example for this med student.
