A patient was admitted to our unit that needed to go to 2SW or another institution, however, he needed medical clearance first. The patient was very manic, and under a Chapter 51, so he couldn't leave the hospital, even as an AMA. It had been a difficult night—security was involved and at one point the Madison Police Department was called and met with the patient. He required a sitter with him at all times. This particular weekend the sitter happened to be one of our nurses, Conner Knellwolf. He was able to gain the patient's trust and build a good relationship with the patient.
The patient talked incessantly in his manic state, but was otherwise appropriate with Conner. The patient required attention that must have been emotionally and physically draining, but Connor stayed with the patient for his eight-hour shift and volunteered to stay four more hours with patient, if needed, and it was needed. Connor also sat with the patient his entire shift the next day, too.
During his time with the patient Connor displayed professionalism at all times. Connor never lost his sense of purpose with this patient. He made the patient feel safe. He was patient and empathetic, and that was vital in gaining the patient's trust and cooperation during his stay. Even the physician responsible for the patient admired Connor's ability develop the therapeutic relationship and work so well with this patient.
