Cora went over to the Emergency Department asking where she could help because she knew they were busy.
Cora started in the EOU as a new graduate nurse exactly 1 year ago. In the past year, she has not only learned her new role as an RN, but she has also excelled as a charge nurse and preceptor on the unit. These 2 roles are usually not something a new graduate nurse takes on! Due to staffing shortages, Cora was forced into these roles earlier than most nurses and has been very successful at them. She has shined in her nursing position all the while facing the challenges of a pandemic and being a new graduate nurse. She also spent the last year in college earning her BSN degree in May.

Cora has received nothing but compliments from her patients, coworkers, and the medical providers she works with. She goes above and beyond to be a team player. If the unit is busy, she will always stay past the end of her shift to help the next shift get started with their assignments. She is always the first one to say yes to working an extra shift especially when she knows we are really short-staffed.

Recently, we had a busy, full unit and Cora answered the call light for a patient that was assigned to another nurse. The patient needed pain medication and Cora immediately went to get it for the patient, despite having a full assignment of her own to care for. She could have just told the patient's nurse that they needed medication but she didn’t want the patient to have to wait longer for the medicine.

Two weeks ago, when the EOU was having a slow day with patients, she went over to the Emergency Department asking where she could help because she knew they were busy. She could have used this time to enjoy having a lighter assignment since the department has been extremely busy lately.

These are just a couple of examples of how Cora always puts patient care first. Our Nurse Manager has received multiple star cards from patients regarding the care Cora has given them. One patient wrote, “Cora did things for me that she could have asked a PCT to do”. Cora has excellent clinical skills and has received multiple compliments on the preceptor review forms from the staff she has oriented. One staff described how patient Cora was when teaching her to start IVs.
