A month ago, the OR was called in on a callback case. Before going in, a pediatric patient needed an urgent IV and anesthesia was called to do that. Cory went with her to see if she could help. The child was very frightened and tearful as well as not feeling very well. Cory was able to calm the child down by used positive encouraging words and even had anesthesia "start" an IV on her to show the patient that no needle would be left in his hand. Cory was the one who started the IV after gaining the patient's trust. The patient's parents were grateful that the IV didn't turn out to be traumatic.
This is just one example of Cory's caring demeanor. Cory has come back to work without being on call to assist new nurses on cases and is always willing to take extra calls, adjust shifts and pick up projects when asked. Cory is well known in the community as she grew up here. I have heard multiple patients say, "let me tell you a story about Cory when she was little". I have also heard "I'm so glad you were my nurse" or "I was so afraid before coming in but feel better now that there is someone I know."

Cory is so wonderful to her patients on a daily basis, but one particular patient stands out from the rest. We had a 6-year-old pediatric patient that was so afraid of everything including being poked by a needle. The physician called me over to place an IV in him because he was so afraid of needles that we only had one chance to get the IV in. Cory offered to help and accompanied me to the patient's room. Cory went out of her way to make a painstaking effort to comfort the patient and help him deal with the fears that were escalating as we searched for a vein. She took her time to console him, demonstrate for him what the IV placement would feel like, and she helped him calm down. His mother was so grateful to this nurse, as was I.
Cory is always willing to step up and offer help. She is a fantastic nurse who's instincts are spot on. She is such a valuable member of our team. It is truly an honor to work with her every day. She is very easy going, always has a smile or a joke for her patients and staff. She puts people at ease from the moment she introduces herself as their nurse. She fulfills her role as a nurse and patient advocate with great dignity and poise!
