The MICU, like any unit or ICU can be a chaotic and sometimes sad and lonely place for any patient on any given day. We have patients who spend long periods of time with us, separated from family, friends, and the home they cherish. This nurse is a master at recognizing this stress and showed through her actions how such a simple act can make such a difference to the patient, family, and staff.
Mr. B. was admitted over a month ago, truly the sickest of the sick. With the incredible work of our collaborative team, his strong will, and a devoted family to support him, Mr. B has made great progress, despite some significant bumps in the road to get there.
Courtney was well aware of the incredible September weather and knew that some sunshine always helps to make things brighter. Mr. B would surely not object to a jaunt outside with some of his "ICU family".
The nursing team and his resident prepared Mr. B for the excursion. It was an effort everyone wished to see through. Mr. B left the unit with his team, his son, a thumbs-up, and sporting a pair of aviator style "rose-colored" sunglasses. The spirits of all who witnessed him heading for the great outdoors were lifted and the day a little less routine.
Courtney realized that it takes a village to get our patients through a crisis, but a very simple plan to take Mr. B outside for some fresh air and a change of scenery made a world of difference for him and his son. And, it definitely gave the staff a reason to smile and see a job well done.
She can be relied upon to do what it takes to make her patients and families feel that our unit truly dedicates to providing quality care. She is a positive, compassionate patient advocate and mentor. She is very much appreciated for her work and thoughtfulness.
