Courtney's actions not only inspire newer nurses but also epitomize the fundamental qualities of nursing.
Courtney Griffin exemplified the true essence of advocacy and leadership in the ICU. With many years of nursing experience, she serves as a leader and role model in the Finard ICU, demonstrating her dedication daily and making a profound impact on every patient she cares for. Recently, Courtney attended to a compassionate and grateful patient diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer who experienced respiratory distress despite receiving treatment; necessitating escalated support including intubation and ventilator assistance. Throughout his challenging journey, which involved two weeks of invasive treatments, periodic paralysis, and prone positioning, Courtney remained a consistent presence, having cared for him numerous times. During a crucial family meeting regarding the continuation of treatment, Courtney, drawing upon her familiarity with the patient and her extensive critical care expertise, recognized a potential avenue for improvement: initiating dialysis. Consulting with the medical team and securing the family's consent, Courtney swiftly arranged for the placement of a dialysis catheter, initiating continuous dialysis on the same day. Over time, the patient's condition markedly improved, eventually regaining consciousness after receiving a tracheostomy. With each passing day, his progress continues, and he is now on a clear path toward discharge without complications. Without Courtney's expertise, experience, and unwavering advocacy on that pivotal day, the patient's outcome might have been different. Thanks to her proactive intervention, the patient and his family can once again communicate and engage meaningfully. Courtney's actions not only inspire newer nurses but also epitomize the fundamental qualities of nursing. She serves as a cornerstone upon which the standards of nursing practice are built, fostering a culture of compassion and excellence in patient care.
