When I think back on the NICU, I will always remember Courtney placing my tiny daughter beneath my wife’s robe for the first time and my wife’s smile, which lit up a room.
Our daughter was unexpectedly born at 34 weeks after my wife had severe preeclampsia. After a few days in the hospital, the doctors decided to induce labor. Our daughter, S, was born and rushed to the NICU. Watching the nurses work was amazing (and terrifying). S was so small and was quickly attached to all sorts of wires and monitors. We quickly settled into a routine of visiting the NICU after my wife was discharged. The nurses - every single one of them - were absolutely amazing. But Courtney really went the extra mile. She patiently wrapped S up and let my wife hold her for the first time. Then, she helped me learn to change a diaper. The following day, she gave S her first bath. Being in the NICU is terrifying. You never know when your child will come off of oxygen or IV meds, whether they’ll get sick, or when they can come home. But Courtney showed absolute confidence in handling S and reassuring us about her condition. To be clear, every NICU nurse we have had has been absolutely stellar. They all are deserving of every accolade in the world. But when I think back on the NICU, I will always remember Courtney placing my tiny daughter beneath my wife’s robe for the first time and my wife’s smile, which lit up a room.
