She sees the needs around her and dreams up possibilities of ways to provide the highest level of patient-centered care.
Courtney Violette, RN, may have only been an infusion nurse for a short time, but she has made a lifetime of difference! She operates out of her strengths, using her creative gifts and talents to bless our patients and team in countless ways. When she transferred to infusion from our internal medicine in-basket team earlier this year, she was “all in” from Day 1. Before she was even off orientation, she made the most beautiful flower arrangements and wreaths for the infusion suite, keeping with our HEC garden theme and giving the space an instant facelift.
When a young mom was diagnosed with cancer and given a grim prognosis, Courtney made sure that she and her family were completely taken care of during their first infusion. She brought coloring pages and crayons for the two young daughters. She fought back tears as she poured out care and compassion, not just for the patient but for the entire family. I could only smile when I found this patient comment card from the same family sharing their deep appreciation for all that was done.
Courtney also designed and painted a banner featuring ribbons around the outside representing each type/color of cancer, with the phrase “Hip, Hip Hooray, your last chemo is today!” Each patient has the option to participate on their graduation day, leaving a handprint and their signature to serve as a source of hope and encouragement for others still on the journey.
Amid this, Courtney was also caring for her own baby, who faced a life-threatening illness, hospitalization, and ongoing health challenges. She was a nurse to our patients during the day and then a nurse to her own child in the evenings. This was such a challenging time, but Courtney showed great strength and resilience, which allowed her to become an even better, more compassionate nurse.
Courtney doesn’t just check the boxes of what must be done, but she looks for ways to go above and beyond what is expected. She sees the needs around her and dreams up possibilities of ways to provide the highest level of patient-centered care. She advocates for her patients and team by always planning ahead and bringing new ideas to the table.
She lives and breathes every day what the DAISY Award is all about! I am so proud to have her on this team and, without a doubt, MUSC is a better place because of her!
