I am submitting this nomination on behalf of the Kendra Family. There is one nurse we would like to recognize at HMC, Cristen Mackwell. W was my father in law and until contracting Covid had been fairly independent and healthy despite his age. He always wore a hat to keep his head warm. When he was sent to the hospital, his hat did not accompany him. Cristen did not hesitate to spend her own money to buy him a hat. She also would not take money for it, as she hoped someone would do the same for her family. W did not want to eat, so Cristen spent time with him and asked what he would eat. He asked for Pierogis, and Cristen not only relayed the message but facilitated getting the pierogis and played a video we recorded for him. When she was at work, whether she was directly caring for W or not, she made sure to Facetime my family and his daughter's family. During the interactions, she was caring and would hold his hand. W began to decline and it became apparent he needed to be intubated. Our family received a great deal of pushback and was trying to be persuaded to make him comfort care. Cristen knew W's and our family's position and escalated his need for intubation. The doctor listened to her, and he was on a vent for several days. W did make it off the vent and was waiting for a peg tube. Cristen noticed a change in him during their final visit. She called to update my husband, and they had a heart-felt conversation. She explained, that W was not out of the woods yet and to be prepared for anything. She gave him comfort knowing W was fighting hard and everything medically possible was in place. Unfortunately, W coded early the following morning. Without that conversation, I think his passing would have been even more difficult. Cristen provided compassionate care to W and our family. She is a phenomenal nurse who provides extraordinary caring, my family is forever grateful for her kindness.
