The patient was just laying in her bed with her eyes closed and a smile on her face. She never let go of the angel and just held it tight in her hands.
Cristie builds special relationships with the patients when helping them with case management needs. This is just one example I would like to nominate her for. She truly made a meaningful difference. There was a patient on IMC who was a recent readmission. The patient had end-stage COPD and she had a difficult time accepting what that meant for her moving forward. The patient had gone back and forth between a full code and DNR multiple times during conversations. Cristie never got upset as she never does with patients and instead, she was kind, patient, and understanding of how difficult this must be for the patient. The patient just so happened to be here on her 68th birthday, the same day she signed a DNR post form. Cristie went to the gift shop and bought her some flowers and a beautiful crystal angel. She then went to the nurse's station and had all the staff come in with her and sing Happy Birthday to the patient. The patient was just laying in her bed with her eyes closed and a smile on her face. She never let go of the angel and just held it tight in her hands. I would imagine that meant the world to her on her last few days. The patient was discharged the next day with hospice to a facility and then passed the following day, Cristie let me and the staff know. I often wonder if she passed holding her special angel. Thank you to Cristie for the special care and understanding she provides. They are all truly blessed to have someone care for them and get them the resources they need.
