March 2026 Honoree
Cristina Velez, RN
I would like to formally recognize Nurse Cristina from the Pediatrics unit for the exceptional care she provided during my 9-month-old son's week-long hospitalization.
This was an incredibly difficult time for our family. As a parent, watching your child undergo repeated procedures, tests, and discomfort is emotionally overwhelming. At the same time, my own mother was undergoing a serious medical procedure, which added another layer of stress and concern. Due to visitor restrictions, the experience felt isolating. However, Nurse Cristina created an environment of steadiness and reassurance that made an immeasurable difference in our stay.
She cared for my son with remarkable attentiveness, gentleness, and professionalism. It was evident in the way she spoke to him, handled him, and consistently prioritized both his comfort and dignity. As a mother, those details matter deeply. Her approach reflected not only clinical competence but genuine compassion.
Equally significant was the way she supported me. She took the time to check in daily, asking about my mother and how I was coping. She recognized that caring for a pediatric patient also means caring for the parent.
During particularly difficult procedures, when I struggled emotionally, she stood beside me and offered calm reassurance. Her presence provided stability in moments that felt overwhelming.
Before this experience, it was difficult for me to think about pediatric hospital units without feeling sadness. The idea of children being hospitalized is overwhelming for any parent. However, our time in Pediatrics completely reshaped my perspective. The unit was not only clinically excellent, but also deeply compassionate and supportive.
I am so very grateful for the care she provided, and I sincerely do not know how we would have navigated that week without her.
