Cristy was my nurse for the overnight shift when I was admitted for labor induction. I am nominating Cristy for the DAISY Awar for two reasons: First, she has an excellent bedside manner, and my partner and I immediately felt comfortable in her care. We are queer and it was a relief to not worry about being misgendered or having to explain our relationship to staff. Second, I am nominating Cristy because she did a wonderful job with an error disclosure. After my epidural, there were fetal heart rate changes and instead of my IV fluids being turned up, the Pitocin was turned up. This caused a worsening of the heart rate changes and Cristy handled this in stride and worked seamlessly with the team of additional staff who came in to care for me.
Later after everything had settled down, she and our midwife came back into the room to explain what had happened. She was calm and straightforward in explaining the mistake. I am a physician and have seen many errors disclosed poorly or not at all to patients and I was extremely impressed with Cristy's professionalism in handling this event. It made me trust her even more. Cristy also went above and beyond and came up to check on how everyone was doing the next night after the baby was born and we had transferred to a different floor. Having her as our nurse was one of the best parts of the admission and I am so thankful for the care she provided to me and my family.
