I am writing to wholeheartedly nominate the outstanding Critical Care Team at Mount Sinai South Nassau for the prestigious DAISY Award. Their unwavering commitment to providing exceptional care to patients in critical conditions has left an indelible mark on both the patients and their families. The Critical Care Team, led by Nydia White and Katherine DeMelis, consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty, demonstrating not only unparalleled medical expertise but also a profound level of compassion and empathy. Their dedication to ensuring the well-being of each patient is truly commendable.

One instance that particularly stands out is their hard work that contributed to the recovery of a 29-year-old female. In this challenging situation, the team exhibited remarkable professionalism, working seamlessly to address the immediate medical needs while also providing emotional support to the patient's family. The 29-year-old patient originally came into the hospital with an ibuprofen overdose and suicide attempt. The patient arrived in the critical care department and was immediately intubated, placed on five vasopressors, and initiated continuous renal replacement therapy. Through the continuous interventions provided by our critical care team, a few days the patient was extubated and transferred to D4. Due to the collaborative nature, our team was able to assess the patient and create and implement a plan that allowed the patient to get the support and services she needed.

What sets this team apart is their collaborative efforts and genuine concern for the well-being of their patients and the hospital as a whole. From continuously contributing to the staffing needs of the hospital and aiding in Rapid Response Team, the Critical Care Team consistently demonstrates a level of excellence that goes beyond the medical textbooks. Our team has demonstrated an exceptional score in quarterly NDNQI data. Furthermore, their commitment to continuous learning and improvement is evident through their participation in various training programs and their proactive approach to incorporating the latest advancements in critical care into their practice.

In the past year, our unit has sent two registered nurses to the National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition (NTI). The NTI experience includes 200 sessions and more than 35 CEs on-site covering the clinical and professional development topics most important to nursing practice. Our team was also able to send two nurses to the magnet conference. The magnet conference allows engagement with nursing colleagues and administrators from Magnet-designated and Pathway-designated and applicant organization. RNs are encouraged to grow professionally by advancing their education and/or by obtaining a professional certification. We are proud that 36% of the CCU RNs are certified and 44% of the ICU RNs are certified.

In summary, the Critical Care Team at Mount Sinai South Nassau epitomizes the qualities of the DAISY Award – exceptional clinical skills combined with genuine compassion. Their tireless efforts and dedication to the well-being of their patients make them truly deserving of this esteemed recognition. Thank you for considering my nomination. I am confident that honoring the Critical Care Team with the DAISY Award will not only recognize their outstanding contributions but also inspire others to emulate the high standards they set.
