We had a patient in the ICU with monkeypox and HIV who died last week (March 2024).

The ICU nurses were simply extraordinary. They always do amazing, compassionate work that is exceptional, but this was exceptionally exceptional.

The patient was suffering horribly. Just looking at him was difficult, to see how much he was enduring. Every touch, normally so comforting, was painful. Everything the nurses had to do, every touch, to keep him clean, keep him safe, medicate him, alleviate the symptoms had to break the nurses’ hearts.

And they did everything that needed doing. They gowned up (doubly), they donned hairnets, booties, N95 masks, face shields, gloves (doubly). They did what had to be done.

And they cared.

They didn’t do it for an award. But I think they should be awarded.
