She was also so mad at the world because of what was going on. Crystal sat with this patient for almost an hour, just talking to her, distracting her before her big procedure, and letting her vent her frustrations.
Crystal was taking care of a patient who had be diagnosed with a brain tumor. This patient's story was frustrating as she was misdiagnosed 2 year prior, making her case more complicated now. When the patient came in, she had also just lost a family member and was going to miss the funeral. Crystal was able to facilitate the family to be together as this was a devastating time for them. This patient was extremely anxious for her surgery. She was also so mad at the world because of what was going on. Crystal sat with this patient for almost an hour, just talking to her, distracting her before her big procedure, and letting her vent her frustrations. When this patient returned to the floor after surgery, she was experiencing severe expressive aphasia. The patient was extremely emotional, but the moment that she saw Crystal, her entire expression changed and you could tell that seeing Crystal brought her a tremendous amount of relief.

Shortly after she came to the floor, the patient started having seizures. She would have focal seizures completely hindering her ability to talk, but she was completely aware of what was happening. One morning, she had a seizure and a rapid response was called, the patient was having a panic attack and Crystal went in and held her hand, staying after her shift was over, until they eventually moved this patient to the ICU.

A couple of months went by, and this same patient was readmitted to our floor. Crystal was there when she was admitted and the moment this patient saw Crystal, she stood up, burst into tears, gave Crystal a giant hug, and was able to tell Crystal, clearly, that she would never forget the comfort that she brought her during her initial stay. Watching this moment for the two of them brought tears to my eyes because we are not often able to see our patients improve, and the strides that this patient made with her speech were miraculous.

This patient is one of countless patients who are touched by Crystal’s compassion, directly and indirectly. Crystal has harbored a culture on 3WE Night Shift where this is the standard of care for any given patient. Being TC, Crystal has embraced her leadership role in creating a team of nurses who are sharp, quick, and fierce patient advocates, as well as compassionate and kind nurses who bring marked relief to the patients that they take care of. Crystal embodies the qualities of a DAISY Nurse.
