It's hard enough to be an inpatient in a hospital, let alone being admitted for cardiac issues during the COVID crisis. I was admitted with a diagnosis of Atrial Fibrillation, and because I was symptomatic, I was able to feel every episode. Needless to say, my anxiety was off the charts. Through the course of my six-day hospitalization, I was treated with a drug that was supposed to ease the symptoms, however, this was not the case. I had Crystal Mavel as my nurse during day shift for three days. Because of her concern, diligence, and persistence, she was able to capture episodes of irregular heartbeats and provide these to my cardiologist, who because of these captured events, was able to schedule me for a cardiac ablation, which subsequently stopped the alarming episodes of atrial fib and other arrhythmias. Not only did Crystal keep a close eye on my heart monitor, but she also provided me with peace of mind, and while I could not have any loved ones visit me while I was inpatient, Crystal checked in on me frequently and showed so much compassion that it made a difficult situation more bearable. Most importantly, Crystal's sense of humor was the best "medicine" in helping me deal with a very new and difficult situation. Crystal is an asset to her unit and to North Kansas City Hospital. I work for another hospital in the Kansas City area and believe me when I say you have a very special nurse working at your facility. Her bedside manner is second to none. I am thankful she was my nurse while I was there.
