Crystal is so selfless and plants seeds of joy everywhere she goes.
I just wanted to reach out to let you know about an extraordinary nurse on our unit. Her kindness, compassion, and devotion to her patients, their families, and to our unit is truly inspiring. She is a true definition of a leader. Her genuine love for others transpires through her work and her energy is contagious. Crystal Perryman has many roles on our unit, and no matter what hat she is wearing she remains professional, compassionate, and dedicated to giving 100% of herself to this unit, its patients, and their families. I have many stories I could share with you about her but here are two.
Crystal had been with her patient for a couple of days and the decision was made to withdraw care on the patient. The patient's daughter came to be with her mom as she was passing. After she passed, Crystal helped pack up the mother's belongings and assisted the daughter downstairs. When they got to the valet, the patient's daughter did not have money for the valet, and unfortunately had to walk and find an ATM for money. Crystal was upset and a little embarrassed that our institution showed no mercy to the woman who just said goodbye to her mother.
After the Patient's daughter finally got her car and left, Crystal came back up to the room and started emailing everyone she could to advocate for a change. Because of Crystal's email, we are now trialing a new system to help facility families and or incidents that may occur on our unit. We have vouchers to give families for incidents like this one and other minor incidents that may occur.
It is not rare for our unit to house a patient for weeks or even months. One patient, in particular, has been on our unit for some time now. Crystal has taken care of her a few times before this one and the patient is wonderful and a joy to take care of. Today Crystal came up to me a few times and was discouraged about how down and out the patient has been today. She was racking her brain for ideas to try and cheer her up. So, we went downstairs to the gift shop and she scoured that place up and down for anything and everything she thought would cheer her patient up. She put together wonderful gift bags of goodies (a comfy robe, a small portable speaker, nail polish, chapstick, etc.) along with a card for people to write some words of encouragement in for her. When she gave it to her I could hear how elated her patient was.
Crystal is so selfless and plants seeds of joy everywhere she goes. Love radiates from her and she truly is such an inspiration, especially during the times we are having. She doesn't do these things for recognition, she does it because she has the gift of empathy, compassion, and kindness, and that is exactly what we need more of. I feel so blessed to work alongside her and witness the impact she has on her patients. She is a DAISY in every way, and I just had to share it with someone.
