Although the ICU is a stressful environment, Crystal was always calm yet highly efficient, never seeming rushed or under pressure.
I am a mother to three young children who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 40. I spent one week in the ICU after my chemo port became infected and developed an abscess. I was admitted for septic shock and was critically ill. Being in the ICU was a blur of beeping machines, being woken up for vital checks every 2 hours, and the sound of neighboring patients in distress. I don't remember all of the names of the nurses who took care of me, but I do remember how hard they worked, constantly being pulled in different directions with endless tasks on their to-do list. Although they all did an excellent job, one nurse, Crystal, stood out among them. Somehow, she made a very difficult job look easy, handling the pressure and stressful environment with grace and ease. She was hard-working and an expert multitasker with a balance of compassion and empathy. Although the ICU is a stressful environment, Crystal was always calm yet highly efficient, never seeming rushed or under pressure. It was also the little things she did for me that made her an outstanding and attentive nurse, such as making me a makeshift warm compress using a bag of hot towels for my neck pain or handing me a washcloth to clean my face and changing my sheets after my infected port was removed at bedside. Before I left the ICU to move to the general floor, I told her that she was one of the best nurses that had taken care of me. She replied that she loved her job and loved taking care of patients. Not everyone can say that about their jobs and so I wanted to recognize Crystal for her dedication and passion for nursing which was reflected in the outstanding job she did in taking care of me.
