Crystal stepped up to help patients and the hospital during the water situation. She was the only GICU RN scheduled to work during a night shift and received a call from the house manager stating that the Emergency Department received a new stroke patient. The house manager never told Crystal to go to the Emergency Department or do anything, it was simply an FYI phone call. Crystal took it a step above and recognized that new stroke patients are very busy patients that require a lot of RN to patient time. She walked to the Emergency Department and told the RN that she would care for the patient until the patient would have a bed and transfer to a nearby hospital. During the wait, she spent the remaining few hours with the patient and family members. She did all of the care required for this patient and she was never told to do any of it. The Emergency Department and more importantly, the patient and their family truly appreciated the care Crystal gave during their stay. Crystal truly stepped up to the plate and recognized that the patient shouldn't be negatively affected during an uncontrollable situation.
