Crystal Stone is new to the ICU in the past year. Her critical care skills have grown steadily. On a recent occasion, she was assigned to a critically ill patient who was rapidly deteriorating in her health status. Although Crystal rose to the occasion and competently cared for her dying patient, she was also able to recognize the needs in this family that was about to lose someone they dearly loved. As the family made the difficult decision to remove life support, Crystal kept the family updated and ensured that all members had a chance to say their goodbyes.
After most of the family had left, one family member wanted to remain behind until the patient died. Crystal supported the family member at the bedside, as the patient’s breathing became progressively shallower, until it finally ceased. Knowing that this family member was strong in practicing her faith and was in distress with the loss of a mother that she loved so deeply, Crystal provided what comfort she could by holding this family member’s hand and praying with her as her mother passed on.
Being a nurse means caring for the physical and emotional needs of patients and their families. On this occasion, Crystal demonstrated the significance of blending both physical and emotional needs in caring for her patient and family. While obviously devastated with the loss of their loved one, she provided comfort and support at a time of great need, which helped ease the burden of loss for this family member.
