Curtis was immeasurably helpful in a very stressful family situation. A patient diagnosed with end-stage gastric cancer was declining rapidly and was DNR. The family arrived with a 7-year-old daughter who was left inconsolable as many were unaware of the severity of the disease. Daughter unaware of diagnosis and how ill the patient was. The family frequently left the daughter alone in the waiting area during the night. Curtis stayed and befriended her. He stayed with her while I explained to her that her father was dying because her family was unable to. He assisted in answering her questions. And she stayed with him most of the night. His caring and compassion were exemplary in a difficult and emotional situation.
