Cynthia Bernd, RN, Labor & Delivery, was nominated for staying by a patient’s side throughout a difficult delivery.

When a patient in labor was preparing to receive an epidural, she began to feel pressure in her chest and ringing in her ears. Cynthia assessed that the patient’s blood pressure had dropped and immediately began an IV with medication to help the patient stabilize. For over three hours, Cynthia remained in the patient’s room to ensure both mom and baby were safe as the labor slowly progressed.

“She never rushed, never panicked; she just calmly and methodically adjusted things while keeping me fully informed,” the patient says.

When it was finally time for the baby to be born, Cynthia stayed at the patient’s side. The baby was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around its body, which explained why the labor had progressed slowly. Anticipating the possibility that the baby would experience breathing issues, Cynthia had the NICU on standby to provide immediate care for the baby.

“Because of her foresight, my son got immediate care. Cynthia stayed with us during that very stressful time and supported both me and my husband with such grace and empathy,” the patient says.

Cynthia continued to care for the patient through postpartum, ensuring the family had the compassionate and attentive care they needed at every step of the process.
