I was on a shift with Cindy Glasser on a night when she took care of a hospice patient who was actively dying and had no family present. As a busy new nurse, it would have been very easy to check the patient quickly, ensure they looked comfortable, and move on to the next task. That is not what Cindy did. She took the time to recognize that there was a change in the patient's breathing and she was likely in the last few minutes of her life. Cindy not only stayed with the patient but held her hand and spoke out loud to her, reminding the patient how much her family loved her until she passed. I know it was a great comfort to the family to know that their loved one did not die alone, and I can only imagine what a comfort it was to the patient herself. I think that Cindy showed a caring and compassion that can't be taught, and I know that she made a difference in that patient’s final moments.
